Prana provides micro loans to the working poor via grassroots organizations in developing nations. In the event that an organization does not have an existing microcredit program, Prana may provide start up capital to support recruitment and training of individuals to provide microcredit operations. We seek to work with indigenous partner organizations.
The microloans to individuals range from $25-$250. Interest rates are kept at or below the commercial lending rate for the country. The typical repayment period is under one year.
Borrowers have very limited if any assets. Therefore there is no asset collateral. Individuals form 3-4 person cohorts that act as social collateral for these small loans. The cohorts meet weekly with a project manager from the partner organization who works with them to facilitate the loan process. Loans are paid back in monthly or biweekly installments. We are strong believers in the motto set by the Grameen Bank –“While one of the goals is to make the fund sustainable it is not the mission”. The mission is to help alleviate poverty.
Due Diligence
While it is the law, we are also morally and ethically bound to ensure that all funds from Prana are being used only for its mission. Prana will conduct due diligence activities to ensure that any organization that it intends to support is not associated with terror in any way or form. We will also not fund any political organizations.
